"Someday I am going to own a few feet of earth somewhere and put a house over it.  Just one big room will do, with a stove and a basin of water, a huge desk, a bookcase and an easel.  Then life can go rolling by, and what floats in through my door will be sufficient for me."

-Henry Miller

Allow us to learn how to love by unlearning how to hate.

The unsettling feeling of dissatisfaction coupled with a curiosity surrounding a life unknown to the present one, I set to the task of risking what was for what could be.  In so doing, I am able to give the painting its full meaning, and myself the courage to trust in what I do not see, but know to exist.

Each mark I make develops a memory within the work and my process, regardless of whether or not I layer over it.  The mark is forever a part of the whole--merging with the new and engaging with it, holding both permanence and impermanence.

If in the span of one's lifetime, an opportunity to lead a people arises, then lead.  But lead with honor, integrity, kindness, and truth.  Lead with the objective and intention to effect positive change.  Lead by example.  Act responsibly.  Speak with humility; avoid speech that is divisive and harmful.  To be a good leader, one must be willing to set aside the ego in the face of unprecedented times, and work to build unity across all partisan lines, across all groups and people.  The strength of a leader lies in his ability to bridge together fellow humans through their differences, not merely their similarities.

"That we find a crystal or a poppy beautiful means that we are less alone, that we are more deeply inserted into existence than the course of a single life would lead us to believe."

-John Berger, The Sense of Sight

Happy New Year, everyone.  May we learn to see in deeper and more meaningful ways in the new year.

"I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, 'Do not worry.  You have always written before and you will write now.  All you have to do is write one true sentence.  Write the truest sentence that you know.'"

-Ernest Hemingway

"If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of.  There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person."

-Fred Rogers

"Many people seem to think it foolish . . . to believe that the world could still change for the better.  And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, 'What do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.'  Yes, evil often seems to to surpass good.  But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts.  One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw.  And so I must still have hope."

-Vincent van Gogh
